Pink Arrow Project: Successful Sophomore Year

(September 13, 2009) - In our second year of sponsoring the groundbreaking Lowell Pink Arrow Project, The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary’s aimed to increase the community’s awareness of cancer prevention and treatment.

This year’s Pink Arrow Project not only turned the football team of Red Arrows and their fans pink on September 11, but the project also included two other athletic events that day, a cross country meet and an outside volleyball game.

It truly was a daylong festival of athletic contests coupled with reminders of the importance of screenings for early cancer detection and remembrances of those lost to the disease. With an informational booth in the stadium, Saint Mary’s passed out literature and information regarding breast health and our services to several dozen interested people during the festivities.

The volleyball game broke an attendance record of 3,000 spectators. In between the volleyball and football games, a pink parade featuring the band, student athletes and local law enforcement marched through the pathways of the Red Arrow Stadium.

Thousands of proud Pink Arrows turned out for the football game, where the victory was handed to Lowell, with the final score of 47-0.
